Kasia Molga » `Artist’s Bio & Statement

Kasia Molga is a media artists/designer/environmentalist and creative coder who works on intersection of art, science, design and technology. Through her practice she examines changes in our perception and relationship with the planet in the context of climate change and unforeseen futures in this increasingly technologically mediated world.
She does that by exploring various aspects of transmitting and manifesting real time environmental and biological data and seek to facilitate an agency for sources of that data. That way she attempts to give a beginning to a dialogue between viewers and the source or entity from which the data originates, so that the representation of that data becomes a language of that source.
She creates interactive, participatory and immersive visual and spatial experiences and narratives, often using Open Source and Hardware technologies and techniques, bespokely created electronics, user interfaces and code, but also plays with more analogue and traditional visuals, animations, film, photography or sometimes hand-drawn pictures.

She has exhibited among others: FILE Festival 2013 (Sao Paulo, BR), Victoria & Albert Museum, Ars Electronica 2012 (Linz, Austria), TRANSNATURAL (NL), Meta.Morf (NO), ISEA (Istanbul, Turkey), Translife Media Arts Triennial (Beijing, China), MIS (Sao Paulo, BR), Dutch Design Week (NL), MOMA (NY). She has received many international awards, nominations and accolades, such as Wellcome Trust Award for Human Sensor, Creative Industries NL Award and ECCE N.I.C.E Award for World Wilder Lab, Ars Electronica 2012 Honorary Mention in a category of Hybrid Arts for “Protei” and “Oil Compass”. She was featured in on and off-line magazines and TV Programmes, most notably Washington Post, Nature Magazine, Stern, Huffington Post, The Guardian, Wired, Dutch Technology Review and BBC.

Kasia is a co-founder and principal investigator of an award winning interdisciplinary collective World Wilder Lab (www.worldwilderlab.net), funding member of Open H2O (former Protei Collective) and holds MA in Interdisciplinary Design Studies (Central Saint Martin College of Arts and Design). She is a regular visiting lecturer at Brunel University, consultant and supervisor for students from University of the Arts London and The Bartlett School of Architecture and Principle of Design and Innovation Faculty in Malaysia Limkokwing University of Creative Technologies. She also taught in Federal University Rio De Janeiro, University of Creative Arts in Londin and University of Greenwich. She has also worked as an Interactive Art Director and Digital Designer for many years. She presents at conferences and publish papers regularly.

RESEARCH INTERESTS & PROJECTS:

1. Environmental Real Time Data / Biodata – looking at ways to transmit, gather and manifest signals and real time information from plants, living organisms, air, sea, soil and us; and its applications in design, architecture and art as starting point of integration of human with “nature”; promoting the view of nature as a collaborator and partner rather than a product and providing a platform of expression to those entities which are often overlooked by us, but are crucial to our well-being. Through the investigation and engagement of real time data I attempt to get us out of the “Um-welt”, so that we could understand more about our environment, its rapid current transition and thus our place in its context. How can we apply Multinatural Democracy?

2. City Residents vs “Nature” – dis/connections and emotional reactions/relations to other than human living entities or entities on which the live is dependent. In the context of environmental changes and disassociation from dirt, soil, microbes etc – are we aware of changes and challenges in our own mental and physical well being? How our own emotional condition is adapting/changing to the times of transition? How can spatial/architectural design help us to identify it?

3. Narratives about the concept of Interconnectedness – Interconnectedness understood as the idea of a state where all things within one system (i.e. our ecosystem/environment) and conditions of their existence are caused by mutual relation and interaction, thus influencing conditions of the whole system. In the age of anthropocene how can we create new stories and myths which would convey this concept in such a way so we can feel an integral part of this planet? What are the tools and methods for us to understand and thus care about oceans and species living far away and in different ecosystem? Oceans and Coral reefs are of a particular interest.

4. Technology / ubiquitous computing / multisensory interfaces as an agent between us and the above topics. – how to augment seamlessly our experience of reality/environment and how to create and convey narratives through mix modes of expression?
